What does a dehumidifier cost to run?

In damp New Zealand homes the dehumidifier does a lot of work, and that is precisely why it can cost more than its modest wattage suggests. Most home units draw only a few hundred watts, which sounds harmless on its own. The bill comes from the sheer number of hours they run, pulling moisture out of cold, damp air.

Through a wet winter one can run for hours every single day, and that is the setting where it turns from a minor appliance into a more significant line on the bill. A few hundred watts is cheap for an hour. The same few hundred watts, held for eight or ten hours a day across the coldest months, adds up to real money.

It earns part of that cost back, though, which sets it apart from a pure drain. A drier home feels warmer at the same temperature and is cheaper to heat, so a dehumidifier often reduces what you would otherwise spend on heating. On top of the comfort, it protects the house and your health from mould, which is worth something no meter can show.

The efficient approach starts before the dehumidifier even switches on. Fix the moisture sources first, through ventilation, extractor fans over the shower and stove, and drying washing outside or under a covered line rather than on an indoor rack. Every litre of moisture you keep out of the house is a litre the dehumidifier does not have to pull back out.

Then size the unit to the space and run it on a humidistat, so it only works when the air is actually damp rather than grinding away on a timer regardless. A humidistat lets the machine switch itself off once the room hits a sensible humidity, which stops the long, pointless hours that quietly build the winter bill.

It is worth weighing a dehumidifier against a heat pump too. A heat pump gently warming and circulating the air keeps a room drier as a side effect of heating it, and does so efficiently.
