What this site is
Powerbill.co.nz is a free calculator that estimates a New Zealand household's monthly power bill based on appliance usage and regional pricing. It is an educational tool. It is not:
- a power retailer,
- a financial adviser,
- an energy auditor,
- an official source of electricity pricing (MBIE is - we restate their published figures).
Estimates, not guarantees
Every number shown on this site is an estimate. Your actual bill depends on your retailer, your plan, the specific appliances you own, how you use them, the weather, your home's insulation, whether your hot water is on ripple control, and other factors the calculator cannot see. Expect real bills to differ from the estimate by at least 10-20% in either direction. Use the tool as a rough guide, not as a forecast.
Nothing on this site constitutes financial advice, energy advice, or a recommendation to switch retailers, purchase an appliance, or make any other financial decision. Always verify against your retailer's invoice and the appliance's rating plate before acting on an estimate.
Data sources
Regional electricity prices come from the MBIE Quarterly Survey of Domestic Electricity Prices (QSDEP), typically updated within a week of each quarterly release. Appliance wattages come from Consumer NZ, EECA Genless, BRANZ, and manufacturer documentation. Source links are listed on each relevant page and summarised on the methodology page.
We do our best to keep the data accurate and current, but make no warranty about completeness or timeliness. If you spot something wrong, see the contact page.
External links
Powerbill.co.nz links to external sites including Powerswitch, retailer websites, MBIE, EECA and others. We have no control over and take no responsibility for the content, accuracy or privacy practices of those sites.
We do not earn referral commissions from Powerswitch. Links to individual retailers may carry a UTM tracking parameter so we can tell how many people click through; we do not currently earn commissions from those clicks.
Advertising
This site carries display advertising through Google AdSense. Ads are selected automatically by Google and their presence on this site is not an endorsement. See the privacy policy for how ad tracking works and how to opt out of personalised ads.
Acceptable use
You may use the site for personal, non-commercial purposes. You may link to any page. You may share estimate URLs freely - they're designed to be shareable. You may not:
- scrape the site at a rate that degrades service for other users,
- republish the calculator's data as your own product,
- use the site in a way that breaches New Zealand law.
No warranty
The site is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. We do not guarantee that it will be available, bug-free, or fit for any particular purpose. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss, damage or cost arising from your use of the site or reliance on the estimates it produces.
Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or other non-excludable New Zealand consumer protection law.
Governing law
These terms are governed by New Zealand law and any disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
Changes
We may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be dated at the top of this page.
