What does a dishwasher cost to run?

A modern dishwasher is usually more efficient than washing the same load by hand, mainly because it uses far less hot water. Almost all of its energy goes into heating that water, not running the pump, so the way it manages water is what really sets the cost.

A typical cycle uses somewhere around 1-1.5 kWh, and the eco cycle uses noticeably less by washing longer at a lower temperature. That trade of time for temperature is the machine's quiet efficiency trick: a gentler, cooler wash over a longer run heats less water to get the same result.

In dollars, that 1.5 kWh cycle costs roughly 60-65 cents at the national average rate of about 42c/kWh. A household running five loads a week uses around 30 kWh a month, so the dishwasher lands near the middle of the bill - not a heavy hitter like hot water or heating, but not free either.

It is worth clearing up the hand-washing myth while we are here. Hand-washing the same dishes under a hot tap usually costs more, because you pour far more heated water down the drain than the machine sprays and recirculates. A well-loaded dishwasher is generally the frugal choice, not the indulgent one.

The savings levers are straightforward. Run it only when full, use the eco or auto cycle, and skip the heated drying, which is often the single most power-hungry part of the cycle for the least benefit. Popping the door open at the end lets the dishes air-dry for free.

The other big lever is timing. Because it is a flexible load you can delay, a dishwasher is a prime candidate for shifting onto a night-rate tariff. There is no reason it has to run the moment you load it, so you can wait for cheaper power.

Set the timer to run after the day rate ends and you pay the cheaper overnight price for the same wash, with the dishes clean and dry by morning.
