What does a microwave cost to run?

The microwave is one of the most energy-efficient ways to heat food. It puts energy straight into the water in the food instead of heating the air, the dish and the room around it. For reheating leftovers or cooking small portions, it uses a small fraction of what an electric oven would for the same result.

That efficiency comes from how targeted it is. Nothing is wasted preheating an empty cavity or holding a big space hot; the moment it switches off, the heating stops. For a plate of last night's dinner it is hard to beat, which is exactly why it earns its place on the bench.

Its weak spot is standby. A microwave spends almost all of its life not cooking, sitting there powering a clock and a touch panel. That idle draw of a couple of watts sounds trivial, and per hour it is, but it never stops.

The catch is the maths of always-on. A couple of watts, every hour of every day, across a whole year, can quietly add up to more than the actual cooking does. The appliance that heats your food in ninety seconds a day may spend more energy telling you the time for the other twenty-three-and-a-half hours.

If the clock does not matter to you, switching it off at the wall when not in use removes that background cost entirely. It is a small saving on its own, but it is the same lesson that applies right across the house: constant low draws add up, brief high draws often do not.

None of this changes the verdict on the microwave as a cooking tool. For reheating and small portions it is one of the most efficient options you have, and leaning on it instead of the big oven for little jobs saves real money.
