What to know about running a clothes dryer (heat pump)

A heat pump dryer uses the same trick as a heat pump heater. Instead of generating heat with a resistive element and throwing it away out a vent, it recycles warm air in a closed loop and runs a refrigeration cycle, so it does the same drying for roughly half the energy. Over a year of regular use, that is a substantial saving against a vented dryer.

Where a vented dryer heats fresh air and blows it straight outside, taking the warmth with it, a heat pump dryer keeps that air circulating, extracting the moisture and reusing the heat over and over. That is why it uses roughly a third of the electricity of a power-hungry vented model to shift the same amount of water out of the same load of washing.

The trade-offs are the upfront cost, a gentler and therefore longer cycle, and the need to empty a water tank, or plumb it to drain, since the moisture is condensed instead of vented. The clothes come out fine, and the lower drying temperature is actually kinder on fabrics, but you do wait longer and there is a tray to tip out or a hose to run to the drain.

It also does not need an external vent, which makes it far more flexible to install. You are not tied to an outside wall or fighting with ducting, so a heat pump dryer can go in a cupboard or an internal laundry where a vented model never could. For a lot of NZ homes that alone settles the choice.

The economics follow the same logic as line-drying versus the dryer, only here the comparison is dryer against dryer. Every load a heat pump model handles for roughly half the running cost of a vented one is money back in your pocket, and across a wet winter of regular use that adds up faster than the sticker gap suggests.

For a household that really relies on a dryer, with lots of washing, a wet climate and no good drying space, it is one of the clearer efficiency upgrades.
