Power bill costs in Kerikeri

There is an irony to power in the Bay of Islands. Kerikeri has one of the mildest climates in the country and one of its steeper electricity rates, and the reason is geography rather than anything the town has done. Top Energy maintains the network across the Far North, which means a great deal of line strung between comparatively few connections, and the cost of keeping it standing is shared among those connections.

That changes which advice actually applies here. Most New Zealand energy advice is really heating advice, and Kerikeri winters are short and gentle. Inland frosts happen, but they are not the season-defining event they are further south, and a heat pump in Kerikeri spends almost all of its life near the top of its efficiency range because it is rarely fighting a freezing outdoor coil.

With heating unable to dominate the bill, hot water usually does. In a Northland house it is often the single largest line item, not because the cylinder is working harder than one in Invercargill but because there is no winter heating load towering over it. An older cylinder with tired lagging, or a thermostat set higher than it needs to be, costs proportionally more here than it does in a colder town.

Humidity is the other half of the story. Subtropical Northland is damp, and damp is the Far North's version of the cold-house problem: mould on window reveals, musty wardrobes, washing that will not dry. The instinct is to run a heater to dry the place out, which works but is an expensive way to do it. A dehumidifier removes the same moisture for a fraction of the power, and throwing the house open on a fine day costs nothing whatsoever.

Summer is a genuine load rather than a rounding error. February in Kerikeri is hot and sticky, and a heat pump running in cooling mode for weeks at a time shows up clearly on a bill. Setting it a couple of degrees warmer and closing curtains against the afternoon sun does more than people expect, because the unit spends far less time at full tilt.

One consequence of the high rate is that the levers most households ignore are worth more here than average. Every kilowatt-hour saved is worth more when each one costs more, so comparing retailers pays better, and so does hunting down the always-on load: the second fridge in the garage, a spa pool, a heated towel rail still running through a Northland summer it was never really needed for.
