Power bill costs in Westport

Westport's problem is not cold. It is water. The West Coast collects rain in quantities the rest of the country finds hard to imagine, and Buller's mild, damp maritime climate means the temperature rarely gets severe while the humidity almost never lets up. Houses here are fighting moisture far more than they are fighting frost, and the power bill reflects it.

Damp air is expensive air. It takes noticeably more energy to warm than dry air does, and because it carries heat away from skin it feels colder at the same thermometer reading, which pushes people to run heaters higher and longer than they otherwise would. The result is a house that costs a lot to keep comfortable despite a climate that, on paper, is not especially harsh.

That makes a dehumidifier one of the more useful appliances a Westport household can own, and one of the more misunderstood. It does not heat the house, but by pulling moisture out it makes the same air feel warmer, which usually means the heater can come down a notch or run for less of the day. Ventilation does the same job for free whenever the weather allows it, which on the Coast is a matter of taking the opportunity when it appears.

The mild temperatures do hand Westport one genuine advantage. Heat pumps are at their most efficient when they are not battling a freezing outdoor coil, and Buller rarely delivers the deep, still frosts that hurt performance in Central Otago or mid-Canterbury. A heat pump here spends most of its working life in the range it was designed for, which makes it a particularly good fit for the local climate.

Working against that is the network. Buller Electricity serves a small and slowly shrinking population across a long, difficult, weather-beaten stretch of coast, where the lines take a hammering and there are relatively few customers to carry the cost of repairing them. That shows up in the rate, and it is not something an individual household can do much about.

What a household can do is attack the load. Older West Coast housing stock often has minimal underfloor insulation and bare timber floors over a damp subfloor, which is a direct path for cold and moisture into the living space. Sealing and insulating there, along with ceiling insulation and a decent extractor over the shower, tends to do more for a Westport bill than any change of appliance.
