It sits inland where the Ongarue meets the Whanganui, ringed by high country, and it gets a properly cold winter with regular hard frosts. This is not the mild coastal North Island; treat any heating estimate built around a generic northern climate as optimistic here.

That has a direct bearing on heat pumps, whose efficiency falls as the outdoor temperature drops. Ceiling insulation first, then underfloor with a ground vapour barrier, then draught-stopping. In a town with winters like this, insulation returns more per dollar than any heater, plan or retailer switch on offer.

As with any rural district, check what sits on the domestic connection before concluding the house is at fault. Pumps, sheds and freezers accumulate quietly.
