There is a discrepancy worth flagging before anything else. Taupo is in the central North Island and gets grouped with northern centres for most purposes, but it sits around three hundred and sixty metres above sea level, and altitude does what altitude does. Taupo gets real frosts, regularly and hard, of a kind that Whangarei or Tauranga simply never see. If you are estimating heating costs here, treat any default built around a mild northern climate as optimistic and adjust it downward.

That matters most for heat pumps, because their efficiency is a direct function of the outdoor temperature. A unit that would comfortably return four units of heat per unit of power on a mild Bay of Plenty morning will be doing well to manage three on a frosty Taupo one. It is still by a distance the cheapest way to heat a house here, but the honest running cost sits closer to a Canterbury figure than a Northland one.

Unison runs the local network and the rate sits near the national average, which is a fair result for a district covering a lot of ground around the lake.

The lake itself moderates conditions near the shore and does nothing for properties further out, so there is real variation within a short drive. Houses on the exposed plateau country away from the water get colder nights and more of them.

Taupo's other distinguishing feature is how many of its houses are not permanently occupied. A large share of the district's housing is holiday homes, and empty houses are not free houses. A hot water cylinder holding temperature for nobody, a fridge running on an empty shelf, a heat pump left on a frost setting and a towel rail nobody thought about will produce a genuinely surprising bill for a property that has been locked up for a month. Switching things off at the wall before leaving is the easiest money most Taupo owners are not saving.

The region also sits on top of one of the country's great geothermal resources, and a small number of properties tap it directly for heating and hot water. If you are on such a system your economics are unlike anyone else's in this calculator, because your largest two loads have effectively left the electricity bill.

For everyone else the ordinary rules apply, with the frost caveat attached. Insulate the ceiling, stop the draughts, size the heat pump for the cold mornings rather than the average day, and put your own rate from a recent bill into the calculator rather than trusting a regional default.
