Power bill costs in Timaru

Timaru is a port town on the South Canterbury coast, and being on the coast is the most useful thing to know about heating a house here. The sea moderates the extremes, so Timaru does not get the ferocious inland frosts that settle on the plains behind it or in the Mackenzie country further up. Winter is cold and persistent rather than savage, which is a meaningfully different problem to solve.

The local weather nuisance is wind rather than frost. Southerlies come in off the bay with nothing to slow them down, and a cold, wet southerly will strip warmth out of a house far faster than a still night at the same temperature. This is why draught-proofing repays effort in Timaru more than the temperature readings alone would suggest. A house that is sealed against a southerly holds its heat; one that is not will keep demanding more power no matter how good the heater is.

Heat pumps work well here for the same reason the frosts are moderate. Coastal air rarely sits far below zero for long, so a unit spends most of its winter in a range where it is genuinely efficient, giving back three or more units of heat for every unit of power. That advantage is real and it is the reason a heat pump beats any plug-in heater over a Timaru winter, even accounting for the handful of colder mornings.

Salt is the countervailing factor, and it is one almost nobody plans for. An outdoor heat pump unit within reach of coastal air corrodes faster than one inland, and a corroded coil transfers heat poorly, so efficiency degrades quietly over years without anything obviously breaking. Rinsing the outdoor unit down occasionally and keeping the fins clear is unglamorous maintenance that protects the running cost you actually paid for.

Beyond heating, Timaru bills look much like anywhere else: hot water taking roughly a quarter to a third, a heated towel rail costing around two hundred dollars a year if it never gets switched off, and a scatter of standby loads. Those are worth attacking once the house itself is holding its heat, because there is little point heating air that is on its way out through a gap under the door.
